Do to the fact that my area is being gentrified and my taxes have been going up dramatically every year for the last 4 years I have been thinking seriously about selling my house before I lose it but I would not be able to get another house outright for what I could sell it for but I could get a helluva nice van, I'm a telecommuter so I would still have an income but without 70% of my current expenses I would only have to worry about food, gas and occasional repairs to said van. but then I started thinking of how hard dating is now. in doing research I know there are nomad couples but most of them were couples before becoming nomads, and a fast growing population of solo female nomads(many of them are telecommuters also) but what happens when they hook up, not cost effective to have 2 vans do they sell both vans for a bigger more decked out van? also many dating sites ask if your willing to relocate, how many are willing to move to ALL OF AMERICA for love?

Also I do notice that when women become nomads they tend to spend waaaaayy more money on it(obvious exception being the ones forced into the life by circumstance like escaping abusive relationships or victims of recession)to make their vans cosmetically appealing, like small apartments lol

I'd suggest sell both vans and pick up a used class C sprinter based motorhome. it's basically spruced up van that you can stand up in. The nomadic lifestyle is growing. Who knows You might might make a connection. Good luck !

Well I'm on the fence, as I'm 60% off the grid all ready lol. and hell I was homeless for a year once as I was taken to the cleaners in family court 24 years ago, so I know I would be ok with that life as it would be a 4 steps up from my rock bottom lol,in fact it would be a step up from my life now as I would actually end up with MORE disposable income but I am a planer so before I do anything I weigh all the pros and cons and make a game plan, and potential romance is the only con I see so far

No.

1. I'm not interested in that lifestyle. I like the general region I live in and wouldn't date someone transient who might pick up and leave at any time.

2. I would worry about the safety of a woman living alone in a van.

3. While I am frugal almost to the point of asceticism in some things, I do appreciate some comfort: particularly private indoor plumbing.

If you really want to save money, why not just move to a cheaper area?

I'm already in the cheapest area in one of the cheapest cities, in my state which has one of the cheapest costs of living in the country. and yet the cost of home ownership has went from affordable and great in the 20 years I've lived here to these property taxes are more than I can afford. almost over night.

Rent a 1 bedroom apartment (or a 2 bedroom apartment with a roommate).

You alluded to this in your OP: I'm not convinced that the van life is inherently cheap. It's cheap if you're content with squatting in a Walmart parking lot, joining a cheap gym for plumbing, and eating beans and rice off a camp stove every night. Not a highly dateable lifestyle. If you want a nicer camper, a semi-permanent/legal place to park it, energy-consuming appliances, waste disposal, etc. then the costs will mount quickly.

Find a housemate (or two).
Then find a better paying job.

I'm sure there are some women out there aren't materialistic and don't want to be tied down, but I am not one of them. I enjoy having running water and electricity and heat in the winter. A kitchen to cook in, a washing machine. I don't even like camping for a weekend, let alone forever.

And as other's have said, I can't imagine that bringing in a roommate to your current living situation or downsizing to an apartment would be less appealing and less cost effective than living in a van down by the river.

I could only date someone who chose a life on the road if they didn't expect me to uproot my entire existence and join them or vice versa, i.e. they were dating with the intention of finding a person so that they could live in that person's house/apartment.

Being on the road and camping are both things that I love to do and I'd be game to come along for the ride from time to time, but it's not a permanent lifestyle that interests me.
