Feh. New York City tried to foist off its dried poop to farmers in Alabama. The state agriculture commissioner saw differently.

Um, so what should we do with the poop? Release it into the ocean? Bacteria, insects and worms eat the poop and other waste and turn it into nutrients. Personally, I don't see the problem. I can think of worse ways to dispose of human waste other than using it to grow crops. It's not like they're mixing the doodie into cartons of soymilk...they're using it as fertilizer.

Y'all do realize that manure (organic fertilizer) is poop from animals, right? And you do all realize that humans are animals, yes?

I imagine that human waste would probably do a great job at breaking down a compost heap. I wouldn't poop right into the garden, but I don't see any problem with it being a percentage of organic fertilizer. Human poop is no less organic than poop from a cow or horse or chicken that's been fed grain grown from a field that was once sprayed with insecticide. It's digested, and eliminated. Gotta do something with it. It -will- end up in the ground, ultimately, whether you like the idea or not.

Hi AnonChick

Human waste that is not composted is of course quite a hazard since it contains like pathogens in which we are susceptible. Most people will not compost all the material at the required 160 degrees either; using human waste is a horrible idea for the home gardener.

The other problem is with heavy metals and other biologically toxic elements and compounds that accumulate in it such as arsenic, cadmium, PCBs and so on.
