How do you deal with them? I have tried placing diatomaceous earth on top of the soil and mixing it in the soil but I still seem to get gnats sometimes.

I've heard of people placing sand on top of the potting soil but wouldn't that keep the soil from breathing?

You're in luck. Our K-State Horticulture Newsletter came out a couple days ago and addresses this problem. Scroll down for the section on fungus gnats. I've been dealing with them here, too, with flypaper for the adults and with Bt in the soil. You'd be surprised how many gnats are trapped with a little roll of Black Flag flypaper!
