I don't just like gardening in the rain. I love gardening in the rain. Weeds pull out easier and when I am done, I either don't have to water at all, or I have to do less watering than I otherwise would. I actually look forward to gardening in the rain.
We had a steady rain today, definitely not a downpour. We have this crazy warm weather for December here in NJ; temps were in the 60s. I had about 18 tulip bulbs and 20 daffodil bulbs left to plant. (WHAT was I thinking when I ordered hundreds of bulbs -- again -- this year?? ) So I was out there in the rain, weeding the area where I wanted to plant, adding some leftover potting soil to the area, putting down mulch, fertilizing, etc. Yes, I got the bulbs planted. I was out there for about 3-4 hours and got soaked to the skin. Had a large straw hat on as my "umbrella" and rain was rolling off it. LOL I am sure I looked like the neighborhood nutbag! Had to throw my clothes in the washer as soon as I came back in the house.
But I was actually very happy when I saw the rain this morning, figuring I would be able to get some work done in the yard. I like the peace and quiet of working in the rain, with everyone else inside. No one was running a lawn mower or a leaf blower.
Had it been 40 degrees, or windy, or had there been a downpour, I don't think I would have been out there, working in the rain. But conditions were perfect today.
I usually avoid the rain, but have found that raking the layers of leaves to gather for mulching and composting is always easier when the leaves are damp, so yesterday despite the drizzle, we did our entire garden. We have found they mulch easier--no dust, no mess, and very malleable. They also don't escape during transport. We have been in the high 60's--perfect weather for this type of gardening fun.
It is. Unless it is stormy. LOL Don't recommend being out in thunder and lightning.
No lightning, but thunder sounds good too!
