Planning to get a sprinkler system installed but I want to do some major landscaping to my backyard.

Would it be wise to wait till the landscaping is done? Which may take some time since it will cost money to redo my backyard...

Before, or else you'll be tearing up your costly landscaping to install the proper watering system.

BEFORE! Adding irrigation can really tear up existing lawns and planting. Our lawn looked great and then we had irrigation installed. Took a year before it looked that good again.

Ok I meant before planning to landscape. i.e. go over landscape plan with landscaper, then put in sprinkler system before the actual landscaping is done.

What kind of landscaping? Will the grade and pitch change? Will you be adding retaining walls and such? Drains, etc? It really depends.
I had 7 stations added to my 3/4 acre lawn and could not tell in about a month where they were trenched. Guys seeded grass, water did the rest.
But, as I said - it depends

Put the landscaper in touch with the sprinkler installer and set up a meeting with both of them for you to discuss the design plan of both the plantings and the sprinkler system. Do you need to put heads in the beds? What are you planting? Should the heads be elevated? How many and what type? All this should be part of the plan before you proceed.

Agree with previous poster. You will need the landscaping design to show the sprinkler installer so he knows where to place the heads.

That's the thing. Wife and I don't know what were going to do to our backyard. Looks like I will need to find a landscaper first then.

Thx

Your plan needs to be done first. If you need to dig trenches for drainage, for plumbing, for any electrical wiring, all of these plans need to be drawn out first.

I'm a retired Landscape Designer. Definitely get your plans drawn up and work with your designer even if you are planning to do the work yourself. the first thing after that is installation of irrigation system. You can always change your plant material list but changing the system is expensive and it does take some tearing up of lawn and beds to get it installed and trouble shoot in the first place.
