Irises are among my favorite perennials too -- so exotic-looking. I have always had great luck with them, most everywhere I have ever lived in NC (coast and the Triangle area). When I had a wood burning fireplace, they thrived from the wood ash mixed into the soil, too. They are stunning in mass plantings.

I too love daylilies. Last year at this time ( fickle?) I may have posted daylilies as my favorites. Perhaps, my current love affair with iris is because mine are so gorgeous right now. They are overwhelming me with their beauty. I'm out there first thing in the morning to admire them.

HC, which iris do you have in water?
Hi Barb,
I am not sure. I wil go out today and check the name and repost it later.

I like old-fashioined bearded irises the best. Those two-tone purple and yellow irises, just like my grandmother had ... so much the better!

I just went out to my pond, and luckily I had left one of the plant stakes in the pots. It is Iris Pseudacorus Variegata, or Yellow Flag. The pots are submerged in about 6 inches of water and they do wonderully.

Thanks, HC. I need to submerge mine as I believe that's what I have too. They would look so lovely in the water.

Daylilies are my favorite. So many colors anymore, I buy more each year and they keep filling in bare spots. They are also reliable coming back every year. I have tried lots of perennials and daylilies do the best for me. I am splitting alot of mine out next fall to share with my kids and my dad. I try to split them every 4 or 5 years.

My husband is especially fond of daylilies, and he loves getting new varieties from a fellow in the AG Department at NC State. My recent favorites have been a 'black' daylily and a lovely cream. They are absolutely stunning planted together.

I'm not sure if these are even available yet, but well worth looking into and adding to your garden.
