I've got two hummingbird feeders out and yesterday I saw my first hummingbird here in southeastern Ohio, temperatures have been a little cool up here which is a little unusual this time of year, we're about 10° below normal.

Saw our first hummers of the season in early May. Then in western Washington state, we saw Rufous Hummers in mid-May. It was a thrill to see a different hummer (here in the east we only see the ruby-throated hummer. They are gorgeous, but I love seeing variety!)

I live west of chicago and have seen them a few times in my backyard around the spirea bushes. I was surprised because the weather hasn't been that great!

I saw hummers in my back yard in southern Maine this past week. I not only saw the hummer but it saw me.....it hovered right in front of my face while I stood on the deck looking at the garden. (My late mother was very fond of hummingbirds that came to her fuscia up in Dexter Maine......I took this one to be a sign from her that she liked my new house and garden.

"If you build it; they will come." Just be patient. Are the plants you planted in bloom yet?

northern suburb of Cincinnati - I have my hummingbird feeder out, but have not seen any hummingbirds yet. My friend said she saw one at her house last week.

We put out humming feeders in the same place yearly and they seem to come back end of April first of May. I wonder if they are the same hummers though. I make my own juice for them by using 4 cups of boiling water to 1 cup white sugar. Dissolve well, let it cool them fill the feeders. Ours even perch on our feeders and if we are sitting on the front porch they will buzz around our heads. Have yet to get any to light in my hand as I have seen in bird magazines.

Caution if you put the extra 'juice' in the fridge be sure to label it well! My DS drank it once thinking it was just chilled water. He didn't fly around all speedy like though.

Forgot to mention that in hot weather you need to change the 'juice' as it will sour and gum up in your feeders if you don't. No need to put red food coloring in it either. I have read this isn't good for the birdies so never did it and we have plenty of them around here.

NC here and the Hummers here are many and in constant motion. I've had my two feedes out for more then a month now and within the last two weeks the number of Hummers has multiplied by many. I always wait until I see the first Hummer and then put up the feeders----they know where to come every year!!
