I think this wall looks very nice.We are going to have to put one up soon about 4 times as long. Were planning to use Railroad Ties, this will be a backyard project.
Someone told my husband and I To be sure to use Rebar also as reinforcement at the bottom of wall to keep it from any damage as the new dirt settled in and over time.

Do your research. I mean it. Railroad ties aren't a good material for retaining walls, and if you aren't familiar with drainage requirements and using a "dead man" to help keep the wall upright, you will be in trouble. Read as much as you can about retaining wall construction. It is very hard work that you do not want to do twice. You can't imagine the power of all that soil once it gets wet.

I like the idea of using different colors, though I probably would've stuck with all cool, or all warm. But overall, I think the wall is really nice, and adds some nice visual interest to the yard.

Nice wall, not hot on the colors though. Looking at the house I can see what they were trying to achieve.

Its well made. I think a mix of three colors would have looked better, the red tan and brown. The gray blocks clash. Now three shades of gray would have matched very well with the gray trim on the house. Thats what I would have went with.

Sheesh, I was out riding around in the car and I thought of this thread.

Here are some walls I liked today:

There's one that's beside an old cemetery, one at a garden center, and one is just in the pharmacy parking lot. I liked all three of these.

The garden center one is the most common kind I've seen for retaining walls and I had one just like it at my old house by the driveway. The stones were all gray though. I also saw a brick retaining wall today but it didn't look as good (to me) as any of these three. Some people will probably hate these but to me, they look more natural.
