It always amuses me that some people have to use thread like these to make passive agressive political statements lol.
My ancestors were pretty boring.
Much found on my paternals ggrandparents.
I know my sister turned up some royal blood on my maternal grandmother's history. When asked about it, she got very upset and wouldn't tell the story. We tried her sister with the same success.
My Maternal gparents were cousins 13 removed. Both decendents of Danial Webster.
I know I'm 5th generation American on both sides. Both sets of gparents started in New England and made their way to Illinois.

Hm, I believe some of my relatives stayed loyal to Germany during the world wars, though they were in America by then, a generation or two over. I'm sure it was difficult for people to balance their pride for their heritage with their moral compass at the time.
Has anyone else found these "shameful" things in their research? I know someone who found a relative who had apparently killed several of her infants. I thought that one was pretty bad.
Nope. As far as I can tell my ancestors were the perpetual victims of other peoples' shameful ancestors. All four grandparents were Jewish, and all four managed to immigrate to the United States during or immediately after World War II (and that was NOT easy).
All four were also the only survivors in their immediate families, so I have no way of knowing how true their anecdotes about the 'old country(s)' were.
However even if I did find out I was descended from someone who did something 'shameful', I would not myself feel ashamed because I have not done anything to be ashamed of. I think that's more of a Christian concept...to feel shame for the actions of your predecessors...Judaism rejects the concept of original sin.
I am most ashamed of my father who was a real life monster, a user, a manipulator, a liar, and a overall terrible person that didn't give a crap about anyone but himself and who has hurt countless people in his miserable life.
For years I was ashamed to be associated with him by sharing the name. Now not so much but what a loser he was.
I bear no shame for the actions of any of my ancestors.
I am certainly disgusted by certain ancestral actions, but that is very different than shame. I think poorly of some very immediate ancestors, but I have no shame as a result. Anyone misguided enough to think that I should bear shame for something a forebear did is unworthy my concern.
