Actually, I was not referring to you. Anyway, you won't be missing any info per-se - they still test the X-chromosome but that is not a direct lineage as it goes through recombination. The info on your autosomal DNA and X chromosome still provides ancestral information. Are you talking about info for youself or are you just needing to know your fathers direct Y ancestry?

I know you weren't referring to me. I think the other poster understood, as well, FWIW.

I do want my direct paternal ancestry, very much. I'm kind of stranded in the mid 1500s since there is some dispute over whether the progenitor of our family in America was from one particular old family in Kent, or from a different (variant spelling) group elsewhere in Britain. I can just skip back beyond all that and hopefully also clear up some uncertainty on the derivation of the surname. There have been several books on the family, including whether the name is Norse or Anglo, and there isn't a clear consensus.

Got it! Yeah, you are getting pretty specific with trying to find out about intra-Britain lineages. Definately get your brother or father or even a male cousin tested for the Y lineage. The Geno 2.0 will do just fine.

Ideally if your dad is alive and in the picture, he can take the test for you.

But then I'd be missing all of the information from my mother's side.

If you take the Geno 2.0 and your Dad (or brother) also take it you miss nothing. You will have the autosomal (which is pretty much a random sample of all your ancestors DNA), the Y-DNA (Paternal Line), the mtDNA (Maternal Line), and you and your dad's X-chromosome info (A more complicated inheritance pattern based on recombination as well).

The point is that I would be out of pocket the entire cost, twice. When I reread, I can see that I didn't mention cost, so that was an oversight.

It's a great deal! Just compare cost to FTDNA or 23andMe (with all that you want to get) and the Geno 2.0. The Geno test is the best out there right now and at $200 you aint gonna get a better deal - take it now. Also, note that those others tests do STRs not SNPs in order to find cousins - if that is what you want instead of autosomal admixture info.

If anyone is interested in getting medical information (23andMe) they need to do their own test regardless.

Some new info on the Geno 2.0 coming-up soon. I linked the FTDNA Forum so you can read all about it.
