I really love this message board, so many wonderful threads/posts...I've gotten so much good advice here.
As my husband and I may be facing a move (about 40 miles away) in 8 months, it has gotten me curious as to the rest of ya'lls' experiences in regards to moving.
What is the shortest/longest time you have ever been in an apartment or house? What is the most any of you have moved in one span of time?
Any comments or elaborations would be welcome.
I'll start off.
I've only lived in apartments, no house yet (I"m in my early 30's)
Also, all of my moves have been in a 50 mile radius in the Dallas/FW area.
After I left the College Dorms in 1998, I've been in the following places:
Apartment #1: From August 1998-May 1999
Apartment #2: May 1999-May 2002
Apartment #3: May 2002-August 2005
Apartment #3: August 2005-July 2006
Apartment #4: July 2006-December 2006 (we broke our lease) (I got married this year as well!)
Apartment #5: Decemebr 2006-June 2007
Apartment #6: June 2007-December 2007 (we were forced to move due to apartment complex being torn down)
Apartment #7: December 2007-March 2008
Apartment #8: March 2008-??
It's been rough keeping up with all the new addresses, phone numbers, etc...the endless forwarding of mail, changing DL's, etc... not to mention the snide comments from ppl I know who have stayed put their whole lives and are constantly mocking the fact I've moved so much! Another downside is that apart from 2 stints in apartments where I stayed 3 years each, I have never felt really settled in, or felt part of a community.
For those of you who have moved alot, do any of you feel rootless or like you are missing something by not staying put in one place? I'm very curious, as I am feeling very torn at the idea of moving yet again, but it may be a real possibilty due to poor planning on our part. (long story!)
The longest I have lived in one place, besides growing up, is where I currently live, but I am soon leaving this house too. We decided to buy ahouse, so we have lived here almost 5 years. During that time (3 years ago) we decided to do some travelling, as my husband is a nurse. We moved to the Seattle area for 4 months, and then to the Los Angeles area for 3 months. That is the shortest amount of time I have lived somewhere. We kept the house in Colorado, rented it out, but decided to move back here. We just sold our house and are on our way to Oregon!
We seem to have trouble staying in one place for too long. I get bored with a town. At times it is hard. However, we have never lived near family, so putting roots down always seemed more difficult. The move to Oregon is to be closer to family, so we are thinking about putting some roots down and starting a family of our own. We'll see if it lasts!
Longest time was growing up and that was about 18 years. Shortest time was 9 months in my dream house and then my husband got transferred!
Since college:
House - 1996-1998 (From NJ to FL)
Apartment - 1998-1999 (local FL)
House - 1999-2006 (local FL)
House - 2006-2007 (four hours north FL)
Rental - 2007-2008 (to CA)
Now moving to another rental next month.
Our recent moves are becoming entertaining (for others, not me) and I've now told people to use PENCIL and not permanent anything when they're writing down our address and phone number. My main constant now has been keeping the same cell phone # so that people always have that. I'm beginning to feel that as soon as I get comfortable and start to know the area and the ins and outs of things, my husband decides he doesn't like it and takes a job somewhere else. It's been frustrating from a standpoint that I have four children and now two of them are school age. Moving without kids is much easier and less stressful. We've promised our children that we'll stay a minimum of one more year here. My husband and kids actually likes it here (I don't really) but having him finally content is worthwhile.

Besides growing up, here is my data:
Apartment - 10 mos then got married....
Apartment with DH - 3.5 yrs then bought a house with DH ....
House with DH - 5 years then sold house and moved to TX with DH
Rental House with DH - 4 mos (current)
I hate where I am living now!!! The best time of my life was in my house that I owned!
House - 3 1/2 years (1984 to 1988)
Apartment w/husband & kids - 1 year (1989 to 1990)
My dad's house (when I left my husband) - 1 year (1990)
A friend's grandmother's house - 1 year (1991)
Apartment w/roommates - 2 1/2 years (1992 - 1994)
Apartment on my own - almost 3 years (1994 - 1997)
Apartment I'm in now - 11 years (1997 to present)
I'm still living in this apartment because I'm trapped here by rent control. I'd have to pay $300 more per month to go anywhere else, and I just don't have the extra money.
We are in NY right visiting my IL while our furniture is moved from GA to CA. My MIL today was looking at her address book and telling us all our addresses.
Here is the short list
bought 1st house 1998, sold 1999
bought 2nd house 2000 sold 2003
bought 3rd house 2002 sold 2006 (yeah we carried 2 homes for 1 year)
bought 4th house 2006 listed for sale yesterday
expect to close on 5th house next week.
Locations are GA,NC,AZ,GA,CA.
Before that several apartments.
I have also lived in WI and VA.
Yes we are a moving circus. The funny part is we don't plan it like that. Something happens and we move. My dh says he hopes we like CA because he doesn't wan to move ever again. For me it is getting harder and harder to learn new phone numbers.
My dh lived in the same place in NY from the time he learned to walk till he went to graduate school. Then he met me .
I was born in one country, grew up in another and then came to the US.
I have covered both hemispheres too.

As an adult, I have moved a lot, so I will spare you the rentals and just focus on the homes we've owned:
1st home 1/2000 - 12/2002 (VT)
2nd home 12/2002 - 11/2005 (PA)
3rd home 11/2005 - 10/2007 (PA)
We are in our 4th home now, and I am planning to stay for a good long while!
Moving every 2-3 years sucks, and now with three little kids, it's just gotten so much harder.
1976 to 1979 - 1st house after graduating from college, same city as I grew up, lived in 1 house until I went to college
1979 to 1982 - New town, completed graduate school, lived in the same place all 3 years
1982 to 1997 - New city, same house for 15 years
1997 to present - Different house, same city
suzie02 - oh my goodness! how do you ever feel settled? and you have to keep decorating new houses!? does your DH's job keep you guys moving around?
I eventually kind of feel settled. Now I don't really decorate. I do buy a piece of furniture here and there. My dh does hate doing blinds since we always buy new. No the job is not what keeps us moving. Only once it has been a job transfer. Just that things happen and we want to move.
