I really didn't want to move ourselves either socketz, but I didn't have a choice with my Mom...it was her call and she was terrified of all the horror stories she read online about moving companies keeping her stuff hostage. So maybe that would be a good excuse for getting rid of some of your things
It wasn't so bad since we also paid for a moving company to unload the truck so in essence all we had to do was tell the movers where to place things. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. The drive was long, but fun.
I did not find it much cheaper to do the move myself. Once I factored a crew on both ends to load and unload, the truck, the fuel, the additional stops, and the wear and tear on us, there was no contest. I did find a full 60% range low to high so shopping must be done. I started with six carriers (no brokers) narrowed to three, and a few calls to clarify price got me the one I am going with.
We have made two trips to the dump, a dozen to the salvation army, and given away many items. We will still move more than I wanted.
My wife and I just moved from Phx to Denison/Sherman 60 miles north of Dallas and used ABF. They were great the price was about what uhaul and others wanted for the truck and car hauler. I did a lot of research and read a lot of horror stories about paying movers by the weight. check out
movingscams.com for some good info
That is a great price and well worth it. From California where everything seems to be more expensive, we looked at moving companies and it was about 7500.00 to move. My Mom ended up paying 2500.00 for the truck. Now the guy who unpacked our truck said that same one going from Tx to Ca would be about 1200.00.

7500??? DAM! I thought that for us 3k from MD to TX was pretty good! I cant believe the amounts I'm hearing from CA to TX
I like your method, but my wife disagrees. She wants to keep everything.
Things I've been dying to throw away....she now wants to move.
Since moving myself is right up there with pulling wisdom teeth and removing wallpaper....I need to find some pricing on decent movers that will move a subset of the stuff I own.
The rest will go to goodwill.
There are some compaines, that haul only, but don't load-unload the house. Bascily you pack everything and haul it to your front lawn. They then leave it at the front lawn of where ever your going.
