We are moving from Boston to Arizona in June. Does anyone have any advice on the best way to do this?
We are torn between a Uhaul or moving company.
Is there a big difference in price?
Anyone have some advice?
Thank you!

We're relocating this summer and we're going with a self-packing, shipping company. Not sure which yet, maybe AFB or Pods. We were on I-95 just today and flew past a U-Haul crawling north, blowing out black smoke. Definitely confirmed our decision!

Uhaul.
Do you really trust the things that you have worked a lifetime for to complete strangers who could care nothing less about your property other than getting it there so they can leave.
They may provide insurance for your things but they cant really replace them.
I have had a bad experience with a moving company. I know it dosent show or anything!

You might want to compare prices of rental with U-haul competitors (Budget, Penske and others). And see how they compare with movers (pods or otherwise).

I priced AFB (Pittsburgh to Taos) and it was about $2200 or so. I drove my things earlier from NYC to Pittsburgh, 15' truck I believe, and it cost 2 tanks of gas, plus $525.00. Budget was a better deal, with insurance, pads, and a full tank. They also honoured their deposit immediately.

Good luck!

Moemommy

Boston to Az is quite a trip.

UHaul has a large legion of bashers with horror stories regarding breakdowns, blown reservations, non-exixtent customer service, etc. A simple Google of "UHaul" will bring up more crap than you want to read.

On the other hand, UHaul does business with thousands of customers every day, so a certain number of complaints are to be expected.

I think the major consideration would be the amount of stuff actually being moved. If your goods will fit into a trailer, if you have a vehicle capable of pulling that trailer, and if you're comfortable making an extended drive while towing, then UHaul might rate serious consideration. We moved a large portion of my wife's treasures from Oregon to Ontario via UHaul trailer for about $300.

However, if you're going to require a truck and perhaps a car dolly behind it, a moving company might be a better option. Those UHaul trucks are not exactly performance oriented, they really suck the gas, and are strictly a 2-person ride. For the unwary, they can also be a real handful at Interstate speeds in traffic.
