that's a pretty good breakdown. yeah, the Office definitely put Scranton on the map lol.
and for us older folks "Allentown" from that Billy Joel song
I keep seeing that "The Office put Scranton on the map" or other such variations but you need to remember, even with 8 million viewers that is only about 2.5% of the population of the U.S.
Binghamton is not one of the Hamptons! (there's no "p" in Binghamton) I think the fact that even the poll lists Binghamton with its most common misspelling knocks it out of the running automatically.
I would say only Buffalo is WELL known nationally. It is a major city. People may have heard of the others, but don't know them well. They know Hershey makes chocolate, they know Syracuse has a university with good teams, they know Allentown from the Billy Joel song (maybe), they may know Albany as NY's capital or Harrisburg as PA's capital, but they really don't know anything else about them that would make them WELL known.
Buffalo - people know them for their sports teams, for Niagara Falls, for the Buffalo Wing, and many people in business know of them for their industries (like banking). Buffalo is the only WELL known city on that list.

I have met people that think Scranton, like Dunder Mifflin, is fictitious. Even those who know it's a town in PA, they know nothing about it other than that it is the setting for "The Office" - that's not what I'd call WELL known.
If forgot about Allentown and that Billy Joel song.
I don't think its a matter of ignorance, but I think many places have a regional importance. But they aren't important to the rest of the country. What might be important in NY isn't so much in say, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico etc. I wouldn't expect someone from the northeast to know the large regional cities in my part of the country, even though they are just as important to us as these places are to you.

Oddly many of the metros being discussed are as large or larger than Ok City they are just far more overshawdowed by the larger cities on the East Coast. Allentown is roughly an hour from Philly and maybe an hour and a half from NYC but I do agree it is known by name but not widely recognized as a major city
yeah, i can see a good portion of this country not knowing what SUNY stands for. let alone CUNY
SUNY - State Univ of New York. there are a ton of them.
CUNY - City Univ of New York
