Thank you for your replies. dogwalker425 and ckhthankgod - thank you much for helping with my search, I will definitely look into your suggestions. just4ivaylo our budget is ~$700k. progmac - I understand your points, and yes it might be tough find a school walking distance wth 1/2 acre homesites - but they do exist. Of course we are willing to bend and have a the school a couple miles away if necessary - the nicer community is more important to us.

if you can deal with a house being a couple miles from school, there are many many suburban communities in the midwest that meet all of your other criteria. here in southwest ohio, centerville, bellbrook, and beavercreek - all suburbs of dayton - come to mind. mason and loveland - both suburbs of cincinnati - would also work. perrysburg near toledo might work...there are many more.
it sounds like you just need a small to midsize city in the midwest - again, there are many.
Have you thought of Connecticut? I live here, and while I love & hate it, I think it has everything you're looking for. The best public schools in the nation, plenty of large lots in very desirable communities, and commute times shouldn't be as much as most other areas in the country. On the flipside, it's not cheap, but if you live outside of Fairfield county (near NYC) it's much more reasonable. Crime rates are super low, too. Healthcare is available everywhere and is of high quaity. The only negatives about CT is that winters are longer than you're used to, it might be too fast paced for some people, and it's quite expensive, but not impossible.
i think the smaller mid sized cities in the midwest might work (think Ft Wayne, not Indianapolis). but, asking for both a 1/2 acre plus lot and a school within walking distance is pretty unrealistic. i mean, if lots are 1/2 acre, how many can reasonably be within walking distance to a school? i mean basically you want a mcmansion next to a school. there are some, maybe, somewhere, but what i've seen, they are in their own subdivisions several miles from the local school. i'm not meaning to sound harsh, but you will need to prioritize. i'd love to have a ten acre estate within walking distance to a couple of restaurants, a grocery store, a library, a rec center, and a park, but it just isn't going to happen
Some the homes I posted have an elementary school and high school close by(Enders Rd. Elementary and Fayetteville-Manlius HS). This is probably in one of the best SD's in Upstate NY too.
Shadow Lake in Papillion, NE. If you can tolerate some snow and humidity, the quality of life is actually quite good here. There are two lakes (man-made, of course) in the development with a walking trail, a newer elementary school in the subdivision and a newer high school a few minutes down the road. There is also a large shopping center across the street and a AAA baseball stadium is being built just down the road. The economy is pretty good here and it is an easy commute.
I have to agree with Papillion NE area. It wasn’t long ago that it was considered one of the best (if not the best) city to live in. There is a lot going for it for sure. I visited the area again earlier this year and was very impressed.
Both Nebraska and Iowa both are great places to raise a family when thinking of all aspects of what we’d call “the good life” or the “American dream”. Yes there are some drawbacks such as colder winters but when looking at all the other values,,,,,, the two states are on top of most lists.

It has some of the best public schools in the state and nation. It's about 10+ miles from mid-town Manhattan, and $700K(+/-) should leave you with a nice selection. The lots there are huge, you'd never know you're right across the river from Manhattan. Lots of wild life there as well (It has a preserved nature forest)
It's a really beautiful town.
It isn't where you are, it is what you do that counts.
