Minnehahapolitan: Here are a few more...

praline (a candy)- praw (rhymes with paw) lean

pirogue - (a boat) pee-row (some say pee-rog, but not if you're Cajun)

fais do-do (a dance or translated literally make sleep)- fay dough-dough (gotta admit it's Cajun not NOLA)

Natchitoches (town) - nak-oh-tish

muffaletta - (BIG sandwich) moo-fah-lot-ah

beignets - (square doughnut) ben-yea

I could go on, but I've hoged up the board enough. If you're interested, people in the NOLA area speak, "yat," and have unique phrases and words for things like neutral ground instead of median. I was 17 when I learned that the rest of the world called neutral grounds medians. While you're here you should ask to have your sandwich dressed.

I live in Louisville, CO, pronouonced Lewis-ville. In Nebraska, people pronouonce the town of Norfolk "Norfork". Here in CO we have "Byuna Vista" (Buena Vista, should be pronounced Bwayna) and "Pee-eb-lo" (Pueblo).

Illinois itself fractures the French "Des Plaines", should be "Day Plan", not pronounced phonetically. Prairie Du Chien, Wis. should be pronounced "Prairie Du Shen", not du Sheen.

Wow, how does that happen? Glad I never took french, I would've flunked! (I knew Gros Ventre, though.)

Thanks for starting the thread, I wanted to the other day when I had to turn the radio OFF!! First, Paul Harvey was butchering words, then it was Dennis Prager.

New Orleans is pronounced "new Orlens" not "New Orleens"....so many people mess this up.

Then there are those places where the natives mispronounce their own places while outsiders actually say it better. See, its "Long Island" and "Boston" NOT "Lwong Island" and "Bahston".

Around here, people tend to mispronounce Laughlin
People like to say Laff-lin, but it is actually Loff-lin
The town of Laughlin, Nevada was named after it's founder...Don Laughlin
But I can understand the confusion

BTW, it took me a while to spell Albuquerque correctly Now it's no problem
