Funny story: I recently stayed at the Super 8 motel in Monroe. On Sunday morning I looked out my window and saw a bus with "Banda Azul Tequilla" painted on it. Googled them, they just played a concert in Monroe!

Here in Kentucky our small town that is most Hispanic is Shelbyville (located btw Louisville & Frankfort. It's 19% Latino as of 2009.

I have always wondered how Shelbyville attracted so many Hispanic residents compared to the other towns in the area...

BTW I forgot to add Beardstown, IL to my previous post, but I know that the Hispanic immigrant population is due to the meat processing plant there. My friend from college used to student-teach at their public school which has a bilingual education program.

Another BTW a few years ago I stayed with a friend (who is married to a formally-illegal Mexican immigrant) who lives in Hemby Bridge, NC and I was also surprised to hear about Monroe's Hispanic population. I guess they're just like the Irish--they get everywhere!

There's a handful of small, exurban communities outside of Philadelphia that would fit this description:

Coatesville, PA (pop. 11,767) - 21.7% Hispanic

Oxford, PA (pop. 4,712) - 27.9% Hispanic

Kennett Square, PA (pop. 5,310) - 46.3% Hispanic

I believe there are some others in South-Central PA and Southern NJ, as they are both major farming areas.

In addition to Allentown, PA there is nearby Reading, PA with a population of 88,000 with 58.2% being Hispanic.
Lots of "Upstate" PA areas are heavily Hispanic now. Hazleton, the Poconos, ABE, Stroudsburg, Emmaus. Also Lancaster, Lebanon, and Chester counties.

Seems like there are two things that attract low income Mexican immigrants: labor intensive agriculture and factory jobs. Shelby Co has a significant tobacco and horse farm ag industrial, both of which are labor intensive. They also have several large factories. (One of my cousins commutes from Owenton to work at the big one off I-64 @ exit 32, has a lot of Asian/ Hispanic immigrant friends from working there).

The reason there are so many Hispanics living off Versailles Rd in Lexington is because it is the nearest residential area to Keeneland race track. I have an uncle that does seasonal work during their yearling sales and he claims to be the only gringo doing the work. He says those race horses are juiced up and very dangerous to deal with. Most Americans wouldn't do that work for $30 an hour.
