Because that is their opinion. Florida is the deepest southern state, tied with Texas. Maine is northern cultured, definitely isn't southern.

Rural North and Rural South are also very different and don't always trend to conservative, Vermont being a prime example.
Well, when I think of the North, I think of fast paced, liberal, urbanized, educated, nonreligious and diverse. Northern rural Maine doesn't seem that way at all. But I guess we have different perspectives. I happened to vote for Massachusetts.

When I think of the South, I think of slow paced, conservative, rural, less educated, religious and homogenous societies.

Florida the deepest southern state? Are you kidding?! FL is perhaps the LEAST southern state in the South (or maybe MD or DE), with so many transplants from the Northeast!

It is the deepest southern state, as in it reaches far south. Is NYC less northeastern because it has transplants? No. Maryland and Delaware are not southern.

By your logic, there are a few places in South Louisiana that aren't southern at all.

You probably should have asked what state best represents the stereotypical Northeast. "Deep north" makes me think of woods, lakes, hunting etc. I voted Maine but VT, WI and northern MI also came to mind.

I think a better term may of been the "High North." The Deep North just sounds awkward.

Vermont, New Hampshire and Connecticut are my main 3 though.

I really wonder if you have spent much time in the south. If so, I wonder if you took your blinders off. I'm a native of the north, but find your stereotyping of each region simplistic, intellectually lazy and offensive.

Have you ever stepped foot south of MD?

I guess VT, NY, Maine, NH, and Mass. are all urban, diverse, and liberal? What is slow, stupid, and homogeneous about NOLA, Tampa, MIA, Houston, ATL, Charlotte, etc.

That comment was just as ignorant as you think us southerners are.

HA! Uneducated...

Maine... all the way. That is only because you want to limit it to the NE.

Because you put it on the poll and it best represents the "Deep North" to those who picked it. What is so hard to understand about that?

You didn't ask for much specifically, you left the question open to interpretation. Deep North to me means rural, laid back, cold snowy winters, warm summers, crisp colorful Falls, Heavily forested, clear lakes and streams, etc.... You didn't ask which State was urban, crowded, nasty, etc....

It doesn't seem like you have ever been out of the NE and seen the real South. Your explanation as to the differences in North and South is outdated and frankly quite condescending and foolish.
