Bangor, ME wouldn't be bad, although it is a bit isolated for many. Disadvantages= locationally disadvantaged, not a very good economy. Advantages= close to the coast and the more remote Northwoods. One of the least expensive options of any place on I-95.
I think the New England and Upstate NY options were covered pretty well.
In terms of Pennsylvania -- although it is a bit isolated and college towns aren't always everyone's cup of tea -- I think the State College area really fits everything you are looking for. If you don't necessarily want to live in-town, Bellefonte, PA is a nice little town nearby. Wilkes-Barre is also another potential option in the Poconos area. Smaller areas like Williamsport, Stroudsburg or Danville may also have what you're looking for.

I know Carroll county, NH the best out of all of those areas. (You included the towns of Wakefield, Brookfield, Wolfeboro, and Ossipee on the list). Send me a DM and I will give you even more detailed info if you have additional questions. I have been on nearly every road in the county.
Utica-Rome is another metro that may work as well. It has actually seen job growth over the past year and the two city centers combined have around 95,000 people and in a metro of about 300,000.
True, Manchester, NH kinda sucks too. It's just an old industrial mill city and a pretty mediocre one at that and not a desirable place for education. Perhaps a suburb on the outskirts of Manchester or somewhere like Concord would be nicer, Manchester does have a nice airport though. North Adams is also pretty isolated, it's a poor little city with dumpy housing not anywhere near an airport and quite a ways from the nearest city with 50K + population. North Adams is pretty redneck for Massachusetts.
Well Nassau County is on the edge of NYC on Long Island so I don't think its meeting the criteria of small/medium city considering it's on the edge of the largest and most crowded city in the country, it's expesive and no mountains nearby, I'd say fail on this one.
North Adams is only lke an hour from Albany, and not to far from Springfield either. And anyhow I guess that makes Bangor, Burlington VT, and Ithica Cruddy because they are far from cities > 50k

Burlington and Ithaca asre sophisticated college towns with much to offer. Burlington also has its own airport that's very well served for a city of its size and a population 40K close enough to 50K with more to offer than most cities of that size. Add in adjacent South Burlington (an extension of the city really) at 17K and you have 57K and 150K+ when including the surrounding county. It's also only 1.5 hours from Montreal and has an interstate highway and has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country (Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed). North Adams is still a remote dumpy town that's on a slow going road over the river and through the woods. If you're going to reccomend Western Mass. go with somewhere decent and interesting that meets more of the OP's criteria like Northampton or Amherst.
bangor maine is not to bad been here for a year from virginia with my wife and kids affordable, job opportunities and low rent, has an airport and most other things most cities have
