Vermont has a very liberal "live and let live" vibe, similar to Maine. Massachusetts has many areas that are singles friendly. I know MANY singles in Boston of all ages and they love it and have no issues. Not sure why people say it's only good for college aged people. And Rhode Island has Newport, many beaches and proximity to Boston. Generally, in New England, the more urbanized cities and towns are more friendly with singles. I am gay, and lived in CT for almost my whole life and NEVER felt discrimination or had any issues at all. I'm 28 years old, too.
Vermont is a great place to stay single. I live in Burlington. If you're over 30, forget it.

I think "good place to be single" means other singles. I can't imagine people are seriously worried about discrimination. Burlington is NOT a good place for single professionals in that there really aren't any. College kids, yes. Adults under 40, no.
