Because we all appear to be sitting in our cars in the drive thru waiting for our fried fat to be served to us.

A couple of thoughts on Obesity in the US:

#1: Regarding kids ! We used to have a PE / Exercise classes for 1 hour each & everyday! They got rid of those programs due to budget cuts. Growing up we didn't have the Internet or texting or cell phones so we went out and played in the neighborhood after school. We wouldn't sit in front of the TV for hours!

#2: Sedentary lifestyle including sitting behind a desk 9-5 .

#3: Lack of a "Urban environment" where everyone now drives instead of walking a few blocks to get groceries or get to school. Some cities don't even have sidewalks!

#4: Fast food culture and a lack of Nutrition! Why bother cooking when you can get a bucket of chicken with lard filled biscuits and gravy? Fresh Veggies & Fruits are expensive as well.

If you compare to what teens looked like in the early 1980's to today's kids it's quite shocking at how many young obese people we have today.

Thoughts?

The last two are the main root of the cause. A society where people sit down in a car to move anywhere while cramming themselves with empty calories that they don't need to exert is going to be a fat society. If people made the choice to pay the extra 50 cents for a healthy meal, and builders built truly walkable and pedestrian friendly communities, our obesity rate would probably be much lower. Take Europe for example. people tend to have better diets over there, and communities are built around the foot, and train station, and they have much lower obesity rates than us.

European countries don't have that low of an obesity rate...
and you don't lose that much weight walking a couple blocks to a grocery store. unless if it is every day and you are sprinting.

Because we value quantity over quality. Our portions are way too big. We should be eating smaller meals that are better quality instead of eating bigger meals that are less quality meals. It's the bigger is better American mentality that is the problem.

Good luck, its unconstitutional to tell people how to eat.

I just find it peculiar that alcoholics and cigarette smokers are treated as pariahs in our society but obese people are not. Yet all three cause massive problems for the healthcare system.

More importantly, perhaps, is the fact that while parents are rightly punished for abusing their children physically they escape without censure for allowing them to become obese at a very young age. This is still child abuse.

When European friends of mine come to visit they are literally open-mouthed at just how many obese people there are and quite how big the average citizen has become in the past two decades or so.

I'm convinced that obesity is more dangerous to the fabric of American society than any terrorist threat.
This makes me sick, Everyone cant help if they are Obese. So we should punish them?

No, not at all. The Americans simply had better manners.
