Charleston is a place that has become one of the most popular vacation spots in America. People come from all over the country to visit us.
But Charlestonians vacation in many different locations around the country. It really depends on where you live and your income.
The beach is generally one of the most popular spots, but many also go to the mountains and major cities.
Generally, Edisto Beach tends to be a spot where many people from the inland counties in our area (Berkeley, Dorchester, Colleton, others) have a house. It is also where some old-money locals go. Kiawah and Seabrook Islands in summer are generally people from other states. Folly Beach, one of the most popular beaches, has groups from all different income brackets.
You can see people from almost any part of SC there. Folly, along with Isle of Palms, is extremely popular with those from states like Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky. Sullivan's Island tends to be more of a local beach with people from the area. PLENTY of people day trip to Sullivan's and IOP from places like Summerville, Goose Creek and Moncks Corner and other towns farther out.
Families tend to go to the Myrtle Beach area or down to Florida for vacation. A large amount of people have houses or boats on Lakes Marion and Moultrie.
The mountains are very popular. You can go to almost any NC mountain town or Gatlinburg in the summer and see plenty of Charlestonians. Atlanta is popular with the Braves and everything to do there, and people also tend to go to Charlotte.
During the winter, many people like to head for the mountains or the ski slopes, as far as Snowshoe in WV, but also the NC and TN slopes. With one cruise line here (most cruises going to the Bahamas), they have become a very popular spot over the past few years.
I live in a touristy spot as well so many people from DC, Balt, NOVA, and PA come here for a summer/fall vacation. Many here go to NC's outer banks for an escape or to FL for a winter vacation.
Most in the Orlando area are kind of provincial and tend to go to the beach an hour or so away for their vacations. Not a lot of "world travelers" here.
Eastern Massachusetts: The most popular: The Cape, the "lake" which can be just about any lake, especially Wini up in NH, and NH in general, the Maine coast (York, etc.) and a lot of people go to south Florida or Orlando. Also a significant amount of people go to the Azores.
NJ people go everywhere, and I mean everywhere. I can go halfway around the world and still can't swing a dead cat without hitting someone from NJ.
Probably to get away from the droves of SE Pennsylvanians who don't go anywhere but the Jersey Shore in the summer.
