Massachusetts? MA is an oddball state from this perspective. Most of the educated and successful people that have settled in MA are from other states and countries who came to the area to go to school and build their career. Their focus is on career and not the state or city. I've never met a MA transplant that made any overt displays of local pride and I had a former job in MA that put me in daily contact with PhDs from all over.
As a former resident of MA for almost 30 years, the most prideful and boastful people were the people of lower socioeconomic status who would see themselves as being better than people from other states because they lived in the region of MIT and Harvard even though they were high school or college dropouts themselves.
