This tread is rather a poll than a discussion.
And the question is: "Have you ever heard anything about country named Latvia?"
Please don't look a wikipedia but just tell us if you know anything about such country and if yes - then what do you know about it.
Thanks!

I know that it is a country in eastern europe on the baltic sea coast. It is a former soviet republic and is bordered on the north by estonia and on the south by lithuania. The capital is Riga. Other than this, I know little about the people, the culture, the government, or the architecture.
Yes I've heard of it. All I know is that it used to be part of the USSR.
I know there it is if you were to give me a map i could point it out. but mentally i Get Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania confused which order they go in.
I know it is in Europe...and uhh... yeah... LOL sorry... hope we don't offend you... I hear of the russians cuting off the Gas on you guys...That is Latvia correct? or is it Estonia? or all 3 of you?
I know all of the basic facts stated above, plus the following things:
For awhile it was part of the Swedish Empire.
The Czars conquered it probably in the 18th century.
Independence was granted by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.
Stalin invaded in 1940.
Deported large numbers of the middle class to Siberia.
The Germans invaded in 1941, and at first the Letts were probably pretty glad to see them.
The Soviets retook the country, and deported more people to Siberia, and imported Russians.
And growing up, maps in the US would carry the advisory that "the United States does not recognize the annexation of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania by the Soviet Union"
And the US kept open the embassies of the Baltics for 50 years waiting for the return of their ambassadors.
Regained independence in 1990.
And is now a member of the EU and NATO, just in case Putin gets ideas as he is a big fan of Stalin.
Other than that I guess I'd say that country is probably relatively flat, and cold.

One of my best friends is Latvian. Her mother grew up there.
