I live in the South and I personally don't trust atheists. They tend to be bitter and hateful people. Not saying they're all like this, but the majority of them come off that way.

Funny, I find religious people to be bigoted, close-minded, and ignorant of reality. Most of them act this way.

I'm neither religious nor Atheist, but I was brought up in a very militantly Atheist home, in the South. Granted, it was in a liberal neighborhood in a big city... but I never had any problems. I think some parts of the South are more "bible belt" than others.

And this is where the issue comes from. Intentionally trying to offend people with militant comments is exactly what causes problems.
