You can simply look at how the two seasons are described in poetry and literature. From Gil Scott Heron's Winter in America to C.S. Lewis' the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, winter is rarely painted as a good thing. The themes and symbolism relating to winter usually involve:
Though perhaps because those writers are from the northern US and especially England, they'd have a bias as winter is the harsher, longer season. But a Greek myth on the seasons had winter painted as a bad thing:
Even though their winters are mild. Makes sense for an agricultural society. Breaks down once winters are even milder, such as coastal California. I remember a John Steinbeck story where the characters were praising the lush green of winter. Doesn't winter look nicer than summer?
I enjoy both the cold and the heat. Always with ample cloud cover. I do NOT like sunny, clear days when it's hot or cold. I'd be miserable in Phoenix and Denver.
I prefer a mild climate such as San Diego or where I am now, Arequipa, Peru. But if I had to choose between cold and hot, I would go with hot as long as you have good ac.
Put on long johns, a sweater, a down coat, hat, gloves, and insulated pants for my walk and bagel this morning. Plenty warm with all that clothing. Quite comfortable in 10-degree weather with a <0 wind chill. I'll take this over 100 degree heat with high humidity. There's no protection from that!
