I'm somewhat curious as to why there is a distinction between West and West Coast. Is it politics, climate, or something else?
I would say that Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and Portland definitely appear to be Western cities to me at their cores, just like places like Denver, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Salt Lake City are.

I kinda agree with you actually. There's not really a difference, people in the Mountain States seem to identify with the "Cali culture" quite strongly.

Meh. We don't really identify with it so much as tolerate it. But there are some similarities to be had.
I'm from Miami, and it can be southern just like Alabama, East Texas, Louisiana etc.
It depends on where you go. The South has a particular culture that is shared all crossed the south, that only people in the south has experienced. South Florida, or Miami to be specific is more than just South Beach and Downtown. You really have to go within the areas like Hialeah, Little Haiti, Opa Locka, North Miami, Coconut Grove, Carol City etc. Same goes for Palm Beach, and Broward. African Americans, Haitians, Jamaicans, Mexicans, Cubans who were all raised in the South have a particular culture we share, The same way that Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, and Jamaicans have in the East coast. Miami or South Florida is more than just old people, or people from New York.
Go listen to Pitbull's earliest music for example, and come back and tell me how does he compare to the east coast.

East and central Texas is more southern than the Miami area.
