Michigan

Not true. Almost 50% of Michigan lives within the Detroit Metro Area. The population of the state is NOT spread even close to equally. And the population is very very low going north of a line drawn from Bay City to Muskegon. And northern Michigan is as sparsely populated as Alaska.

East St. Louis is a war zone that makes Flint look positively cosmotpolitan, and Cairo looks like a Scooby Doo ghost town now that it's down about 80% from its peak population. Downtown is completely abandoned -- if Cairo were in the desert, tumbleweeds would roll down the streets. The Alexander County tax base (the county where Cairo is) is so depleted that the county sheriff's office basically disbanded -- IL state police have taken over law enforcement duties.

What lead to this? Loss of jobs and Businesses? Blight?.............or do you know?

In SoCal, before any place gets that bad or run down by blight, Redevelopment takes over. Eminent Domain usually plays a part in it too.

A whole bunch of factors. Cairo's fortunes were tied to shipping along the inland waterways, what with it located right at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Its decline started with the rise of commercial air and interstate shipping. Lack of foresight and planning led to a failure to adjust, its relative isolation didn't help, and racial tensions that culminated in full-blown race riots was the nail in the coffin. White flight had already started before that, but the race riots accelerated it and also helped transform "white flight" into "equal-opportunity flight" as everyone started jumping ship.

As a Michigan resident, I actually enjoy the scenery in Illinois. I like the flatness, the endless miles of farms and fields, and being able to see for miles. Maybe it's because I grew up on a farm and it's really interesting to me to see it on such a grand scale. I would much rather drive through Illinois than a heavily forested state like Alabama or Georgia. You want to talk about boring? Miles of dense trees where I can't see beyond the side of the road is extremely boring to me!

But I'm obviously in the minority here. Oh, and I still voted for Michigan.

Are you people slow? Compared to Illinois, where 10 million out of 13 million people live in the immediate Chicagoland area, then yes the population of Michigan is distributed much more evenly.

10-13 million that's hard to believe. LA is bigger and more crowded than Chicago and the population is appox, 3-5 million. that's not counting the illegal immigrants.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Illinois has its pretty spots like Starved Rock and so forth, but Michigan is vastly more beautiful than Illinois. Bad economy or not, I have a job that can carry into any state so why not pick the nicer one?
Chicago is a city, not a state so it did not sway my vote. Most Chicagoans I know snub their own state in favor of Wisconsin. That says alot.

That's interesting. I'd like to read some History on this. I can probably find it.

We're quick enough to know that the 10 million (really 9.7 million) figure you are siting for the population of the Chicago area INCLUDES parts of Indiana and Wisconsin in that number and is NOT a true indication of the percentage of the population of Illinois that live in the Chicago Metro area. Try again.

OK. You're wrong.

When most people refer to a place like LA or Chicago, 99% of the time they are referring to the entire metro area, not just the population within the city limits. Chicago has 2.8 million in the city with approximately 10 million in the metro. LA has 3.8 million in the city with 13 million in the metro.
