Yes the housing is expensive. So is Seattle and half the cities on the list. I think the speculation that he wanted an area less expensive than Seattle was speculation and was never voiced by amazon.
These states should be ashamed of themselves. They gave all of those tax breaks in order for Bezos to say that he is going to follow his "heart". Ridiculous! He was going to pick DC no matter what they did.

Which states gave tax breaks? I know that some states offered tax breaks, particularly NJ, but I think that was contingent upon being selected. So none gave tax breaks afaik.

Look beyond HQ2. Don't think that Bezos doesn't have other plans for many of these cities.

Several sources involved in the HQ2 search have reported that Amazon has expressed concerns about housing affordability to candidate cities. It's also been reported that affordability has been the reason, at least in part, they've had trouble attracting/keeping talent in Seattle.
DC and NoVA is simply an odd choice (one of the oddest amongst the finalists, in fact) if that was an issue they were trying to avoid. That's all.

This is my problem. The contingency shouldn't even have been there. If it didn't seriously affect the outcome then they should have gave nothing!

It doesn't matter if he does something beyond HQ2. They all proved that they would bend over backwards to have him anyway. If tax breaks mean something then it should be that they actually tip the scales. But this follow my heart garbage makes it clear that at the end of the day, it's the much larger issues of QOL and basic economic and social conditions that really affect the decision. They shouldn't give tax breaks to him just for existing in the state. Tell him that he can come and he can pay just like everyone else in the state.

Bezos apparently wants to become a big political player within the federal government. No city could possibly compete with DC (the nation's capitol) when it comes to that, no matter how much effort they put into improving QOL, social conditions, etc.

Do you have a link where someone from amazon said that? Everything that I ever read was speculation and I don’t recall anyone from amazon ever saying that regarding the search.

Ok. For the most part we have not been told what tax breaks were offered, if any. Unless you live in NJ it’s an odd thing to complain about. Maybe none of the cities that made the final cut offered much beyond what they would do for any big potential employer.

Can you please quote the reply where that poster complained specifically about NJ's tax breaks for HQ2?
