A ****storm of negative press, for starters. Every city on the Top 20 list has a newspaper, TV stations, et al.
Would Amazon care, though? I really doubt most people who use Amazon give a damn about things like this, so they'll still use it and still buy stock in the company.

Well, that's debatable. Personally, I think any company that shrugs off its public image these days is acting the fool.

Agreed. Looks like public backlash is picking up steam. And I am absolutely positive Walmart doesn’t want Amazon nowhere near one of it’s largest markets DFW. Walmart has already quietly been building up its Tech scene in Texas (Dallas & Austin). I suspect this going to ramp up a notch after these recent events.
If New Yorkers can actually convince Amazon it's a mistake to go to NY, that would be just fine by me . Go back to the original plan and put the whole thing in Crystal City. Or, split it in two pieces, one in Crystal City and the other also in Nova, at the Reston/Herndon site. That would be awesome!
It looks like this came down to a decision on available talent, and likely an EC presence
? for the group was the LI City site ever part of the first submissions or list of 20 not that it matters but am curious.
One thing that dint factor is COL apparently but available talent looks like was a huge factor and probably makes sense.
Both have decent transit connection but neither in the direct hub; both with pretty good airport connectivity and generally urban
My heart would have loved to see a split say between Chicago and Philly but in the end it seems that EC played a role and also the talent concentration
I think Amazon knew it absolutely needed a truly substantial East Coast hub all along, so certainly not any sort of surprise in that regard.
But the fact that this is going to be a "split" East Coast presence is quite the bait and switch, which certainly doesn't instill much confidence in any other "forthcoming" investments.
The fact that top tier talent magnets like DC and NYC are also providing "incentives" for a multi-billion dollar corporation also indicates how far this country has fallen in the race-to-the-bottom groveling for corporate jobs.
This whole saga should be aired on HGTV as a very bad episode of House Hunters....
"Jeff Bezos and his partners are looking for a new home. Let's follow them as they explore each one in depth. At the end of the show, they'll pick one. Oh wait, viewers just found out the show is fixed! They knew which house they wanted all along, in fact they already bought it!"

Atlanta: Nice house, but Jeff faces a tough commute and doesn't like the neighbors. Chicago: Lovely neighborhood, but too chilly, too close to the old neighborhood and Jeff swears he hears gunfire over the back fence. Austin: Nice, but the house is a little cramped and Jeff doesn't like the music the neighbors play. Boston: Jeff likes the neighborhood and the neighbors, but feels there's too much distance from the old neighborhood. The family might not be comfortable with this choice.
In the end, the social climber in Jeff opts to split his time between the elite neighborhoods of NYC and DC. The people in the other cities simply weren't in his class and reminded him too much of the drudges he left behind in Seattle.
