So from pulling up a list of city proper populations...
Connecticut: New Haven over Bridgeport
Florida: Miami over Jacksonville
Kansas: Overland Park over Wichita <<< I don't know about this one so I'm bringing it up for discussion. Overland Park is a booming suburb with a strong economy and generally regarded as a very desirable place to live nationally but is that enough for it to overshadow Wichita?
Missouri: St. Louis over KC
Ohio: Cleveland and also Cincy over Columbus. It's just national recognition but not necessarily economy based. Having pro sports teams contributes to that.
MYou could divide it down to counties.. for some areas.
ie. Manhattan NY (New York County) outshines Kings (Brooklyn) and Queens (Queens) and has a far smaller population.
NY has different system. New York City has 5 boroughs (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Stattten Island). Not sure county matters here. NYC is one city for sure.
It has a larger GDP, and it’s safe to say it’s probably recognized more due to movies and TV set there, and the NFL’s Cowboys. Not to mention having all four pro sports teams vs three for Houston.
The leads aren't by much. Those cultural factors at DFW amount mainly to name references, and the GDP was actually smaller than Houston's until recently, despite being a larger metro area. So it's more of a slight edge, rather than an eclipse.

That's really it pulling up the wikipedia list.
Overland Park has a long way to catch Wichita, but interesting, this description of Shawnee Mission which includes Overland Park and other towns in Johnson County, indicates it is now larger than Wichita.
Sorry, but no. With Philadelphia's big revival in the 21st Century, this is especially not true. That doesn't mean Pittsburgh is weak though....
Well, yes actually.
OP didn't really specify a criteria, and its a historical fact that Pittsburgh beat Philadelphia in wealth (stockholders) per capita for good part of the last century. Philly plays third fiddle in its region, I don't think we'll hear anyone refer to Pittsburgh as Cleveland's easternmost neighborhood in the near future. Pirates, Steelers, Pens all have considerably more championship rings than their Philly counterparts.
