In Dallas proper maybe a 1 one or 2 bedroom condo or townhome in a high crime area.

You're not going to get much in Raleigh for that price, and what you get will be mostly cheaply built existing townhomes and maybe some small existing condos. A SFH at that price is hard to come by but not impossible. You won't find anything new, not even a low builder grade condo or townhouse.

Snow without mountains and oceans has a way of keeping things in check. Since I happen to like snow, it's a win-win.

True...There are mountains in Upstate NY and you can still get affordable homes not too far from them or in some cases in mountain towns.
