It’s only about an hour and 45 minutes from Hartford; has mountains such as the Catskills, Adirondacks, Berkshires and Taconics nearby; you have lakeside beaches within an hour, has multiple urban options in its area, nice suburban options, a late final call and is only about 2 and a half hours from NYC/Boston.

I've been looking at Albany today actually, and it's looking like a great option. I definitely want either tons and tons of snow or coastline (proximity to lakes + snow might even be better than ocean coast).

So many good replies and places to think about, thank you everyone!

If the bolted line is what you want, then places like Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo and Erie would fit that criteria. Syracuse is closer to CT, mountains and is actually on a lake(Onondaga Lake), while the area gets a lot of snow(especially north of the city and east of Lake Ontario. It is about 4 hours, give or take, from the bigger cities in CT. In fact, this is a popular park just north of Syracuse next to that lake: https://www.onondagacountyparks.com/...aga-lake-park/

You mentioned beaches and this is another county park with a beach north of the city on Oneida Lake, the biggest lake completely within NY State: https://www.onondagacountyparks.com/...a-shores-park/

This another popular area state park east of the city also with a beach(campsites, trails and a golf course): https://parks.ny.gov/parks/172/details.aspx

All are within 20-25 minutes of the city. Same for these hiking spots: https://cnyhiking.com/MorganHillStateForest.htm
