I grew up in Birmingham (The train station area in Bham definitely looked sketchy for a long time, but it was actually in a pretty accessible location; say what you will about how bad BHam public transit is, the airport/train station are about as good locations as those types of places can possibly get. Nowadays the train station's a lot nicer looking, but Amtrak's gotten more expensive.). Generally speaking, train was the best way to visit New Orleans: the timing was just right. Similarly, I went to UVA. So, at the time, moving was easier with Amtrak, since bags were free. I took the train to DC once or twice to visit, from Charlottesville. SC and NC didn't really have reasonable arrival/departure times for the Crescent, so I never used the train for anything there.

Taken it many times from Chicago to Seattle and return. Get a sleeper, cuz the seats are a pita after 300 miles. The train is almost never on time from Whitefish, Mt to Spokane, Wa. Worse in the winter.

Hooray, Amtrak-Cascades resumes Seattle<->Vancouver BC. 1 RT/day.

It's a nice trainride for a quick trip. ~$35 oneway with advance purchase. 4 hours.
Amtrak-CanTrail Bus ~$35 with advance purchase, 3.5 hours.

I got this coming weekend for Amtrak-CanTrail to Richmond BC (Vancouver airport). Night Markets.
Train doesn't stop at Richmond.

We took it a few times on family trips. I mainly remember the Chicago <--> Seattle and Seattle <--> Vancouver routes, which would've been 2010 (doesn't sound like a long time ago, but feels like a different lifetime). We stopped at Glacier National Park in Montana in the middle.
