New York is a truly great city, but I'm not sure I'd nominate greatest ever (not yet at least). Rome, Jericho, Athens, Jerusalem, Beijing, Constantinople (err, uh, Istanbul), Alexandria (maybe Cairo?), etc. all have valid claims. You could also throw Mexico City (former Tenochtitlan), Tokyo, London, Paris, and Moscow into the mix.

in the Western hemisphere, yes, it is. Although i think Tokyo gives it competition. Definently, by FAR, the best city in the US though!!

It's all subjective...all of it.

True.

Greatest to me means the most universally ever known and fully serviced. Not necassarily the greatest for me to live in.

Greatest and most entertaining to visit in the US definetely, but not best quality of life unless you are rich.

Ever as in all-time? NO I repeat no, I'm no NY basher but NY is just great. All of those cities that Widowmaker2k mentioned has WAY more history than NY and has contributed MORE to the world (think a little before y'all respond). NY is a great modern city but is NY on the same level as Rome, Egypt, London, Athens, etc, when they were at their peak? Then you can't really make the claim, see ya.

The poster said the greatest, as in the best. Not the most powerful. BTW is Egypt a really nice city??
