New Bedford actually has a diverse Black History due to a big migration of Blacks from the Cape Verde Islands, just off the West coast of Africa. They have had a presence in New Bedford, South Mass., Rhode Island, Connecticut, Long island and even NJ for a while. Don't let the Portuguese surnames fool ya'.
