It is an utopia and I think you are an utopian or a dreamer.

The hippie generation was centered in San Francisco & the Bay Area in the 1960's-1970's. The coastline in California from Big Sur to Arcata is certainly quite hospitable to those who live a somewhat "hippie" lifestyle [communes\ natural foods\ art\ weed, etc.]. Oregon was the destination for many hippies who sought a quiet farm life.

Default "Hippy" towns.

I have done a good amount of searching. I know similar questions have been asked previously, but the vast majority of the responses are outdated accounts. A lot of reviews have been of the "this place has completely gone downhill" nature : /. So I'm looking for recent experiences here. Maybe you can help.
Let me tell you what I'm looking for when I move in the near future, in order of importance (although they're all pretty important to me).

-Genuinely friendly and open minded people. I understand that there will be negative people anywhere I go, but I am currently living in San Francisco and I have never been surrounded by so many pretentious, self important people. I need to get away from this.
-Nature. Nothing specific really. Just someplace that still has some life left untouched by concrete and cell towers. No big cities.
-Decent weather. No huge expectations. It would be nice if it weren't overcast the majority of the time.
-Free thinkers. Think vegans, naturalists, people who don't buy into NWO games, activists of all sorts, spiritual types, etc. I need a place where I won't be completely lost if I'm not all about drinking and mainstream social garbage.
-A place where I do not need to own a car to have a life. Bike friendly/public transport is good.
-Preferably not too far toward the east coast, but I'm open to all suggestions.

Cost isn't a big issue. So do places like this still exist? This type of mentality is completely lost on SF.

Thanks

Look at Fremont, WA which is immediately north of Seattle. Young college town Vey funky and artsy. And even a nude bicycle race every year.
Come for a visit. You will probably love it, rain and all.

//www.city-data.com/top2/h38.html

That lists cities where people bike to work.

//www.city-data.com/top2/c458.html

That lists cities with small temperature variants.

Overlaps seem to be limited to

Berkeley, California
Miami Beach, Florida
Santa Barbara, California
Santa Cruz, California

That might be due to one being limited to cities over 50,000

Utne's "most enlightened cities" included

Arcata, California
Chattanooga, Tennessee
Iowa City, Iowa
Portland, Oregon

The rest of their list seems to be in East Coast states. Maybe Tennesssee is even going too far.

Thanks a lot for the replies, both of you. However, moving to another big city is not ideal.
Thomas R: Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that the Utne list you posted is from 1997? I'm looking for the most recent accounts possible.

Sorry to break this to you Alexakaz..while I am far from a hippy..I used to know them well growing up in Boulder Colorado... Well, I'm not really looking for an exact reincarnation of the 60s here. Just people who care, that's all : ) Should that be so hard to find?

I hear what you are saying, I grew up in the 80's..Boulder was still very hippy then. It was hard core even at that time...
