In some ways yes, in some ways no. States like Michigan, Ohio, Indiana that have been hit hard with plant closings and unemployment, foreclosures and crappy weather probably aren't chock full of happy people. I'd bet there are more happy people in NYC as opposed to upstate NY where many towns are suffering from high unemployment, high property tax, and again the harsh winters.
I don't know what formula they used to come up with these lists aside from some random poll, but most of them are a crock. Isn't Seattle supposed to be the suicide capital of the world? So why wouldn't Washington State be on that list? Arizona and Nevada got hit the hardest with foreclosures, and if weather was one of the driving factors then I would think North Dakota or Wyoming would make the list as well. Happiness is a state of mind, not a geographic location.
I disagree with three of the states listed. Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Jersey should not be on this list. I was surprised Florida did not make the top 10.
People who want to make love to the sun. Seriously, just because a place has snow does not automatically make it unhappy. Arizona is one of the unhappiest states I've been to, and I've been to 38 of them + DC.
California is not an unhappy state. Sure, people there probably get sick of the rising prices and illegals and such, but every time I visit California almost everyone I talk to usually says how much they love it there and so on and so on. Yeah, I'm sure there are unhappy people there, and people that wished they didn't live in California, but I think most people in that state enjoy being under the sunshine all the time and such.
I hate these lists anyways. Just another list that ****s on Ohio and Michigan...again.
I'm not a big "believer" in polls and surveys. But I would have been HIGHLY surprised if Michigan was not on this list. Oregon was on this list last year, and it was sure a bone of contention with its people. Thing is, at least half the people I know here ARE chronically depressed.

I agree on that. I think there's some validity to the list but the constant equation of "the more sunny, the better" into these lists feels/seems wrongheaded to me. Some do get depressed by a lack of sun, but I often feel invigorated by the cold and snow. Even if there was some kind of correlation between sunniness and happiness my gut-feeling is that this would only be true up to a point. Otherwise people living in deserts would be the happiest of all and I really doubt that's true.
It looks like it's based on unemployment and stuff like that. Though there are a lot of pictures of people shoveling snow, the snowiest states didn't make the list. CT, RI, MA, IL, CA are all on there. I can't remember the rest.
At first I thought people were unhappy because of the snow but then I realized when they took the photos, that was all there was out there. They've got the right photo for California. I didn't even have to read what it said on the side.
