The title says most of it

We want to be near water again. We are currently in Central TX, north of Austin.

I spent most of my life near marinas or at least by the coast (west coast, however. Now we want the east coast ).

We have narrowed (such as it is) our choice to either the west coast of Florida or the Georgia coast.

I have tried numerous phrasing to search for posts about *walkable, active downtowns ON the coast of Georgia* but found no posts. In addition, our desire is to live very near a medium to large size marina. One with more than one restaurant that also has shopping etc.

My husband will still need to work in the automotive industry as a mechanic, shop foreman etc. so we likely need an area with a population of more than 50,000.

Any ideas, opinions etc.? Or would this be a pipedream for Georgia?

Thank you

Brunswick sounds pretty close to what you're looking for. I can't speak real well to the "walkability" of downtown, but it is a major port for shipping/receiving automobiles.

Don't rule out Savannah, either.

No large marina in downtown Savannah. I think you'll find more of what you're looking for in Florida or even SC. There are a number of planned communities in the Florida panhandle and on Hilton Head Island that incorporate marinas into their own plans. I'm sure as you work your way up and down the SE coast you'll find something.

Of course, St. Simons island might fit, too.

You might want to check into Beaufort, SC which is near the Georgia border.

Brunswick has a large marina and waterfront park adjacent to downtown; just south of downtown is a lovely Victorian District. Then there is, of course, the village area of St Simons; it's not really walkable to the St Simons Marina, but very bikeable.

Brunswick:

Default Thank You :)

Thank you very much for the opinions, they really do help.
Sarasota FL on the gulf coast has what I am looking for, but, alas, no work for my husband so I am checking into the areas you have mentioned as starting points

@mccarley...thank you Very pretty and quaint for certain but the job possibility is not there...but I would love to vistit there and try the seafood!

@DJDeadParrot...Brunswick is certainly on my list of choices to consider visiting, have you/do you live there? (So sorry, I have forgotten your location) I have read very mixed reviews on the downtown so a visit is in order on that LOL

@ellie...I need to check into Hilton Head for job prospects but it does sound very lovely! SC has been on our list off and on and I should keep it ON the list

@Mutiny77...LOL, since SC is back on our list I will research Beaufort closely, thank you

@LovinDecatur...The pic of Brunswick marina is beautiful! We will visit there and check out the downtown for ourselves b/c the marina is very pretty

Thank you again everyone!

I have researched this exact question extensively. You probably have more leeway, I live on my boat so the location of the marina to town is VERY critical. I have looked at many places over the last several years. Happy to give my thoughts on any particular location, but to many to go into detail about in this post. So here are the places I looked at. Savannah (no real marina), Brunswick, St. Mary's, Fernandina Beach, Jacksonville, Daytona, Coco Beach, Ft.Pierce, New Smyrna, Stuart, Vero, Ft lauderdale, Dunedin, Ocean Springs. I have also looked at a great many places on the west coast and keys. After careful consideration we chose Fernandina Beach. Best fit for us, but everyone likes something different.
