Asheville, NC has the scenery, a University, mega culture, great restaurants, four seasons,etc..I like Greenville, I agree with another poster, it is quite conservative. Have only been to Athens, and wasn't impressed. Perhaps we weren't in the good section of town.

Nah, Athens sucks. People see one little eclectic grouping of bars, restaurants, and all of a sudden an entire area is deemed nice. Athens is “Cracker Barrel restaurant nice”, with some very dangerous hoods. It gets marketed as a nice town because of the school, which too is...

Never heard anyone say that before. I've always thought it was just okay.

Yeah, that opinion on Auburn vs Athens is obviously so blue and orange tinted. It's great that someone appreciates their school's town, but Athens is head and shoulders above Auburn.

Sadly, Athens has a "hood" problem.

easy access to walking/hiking/nature.
Athens has a great downtown and I think you'd be happy there but there are better small cities for nature access.

Cookeville TN is a small college town that has a dozen waterfalls within a 45 minute drive. It's very safe and has a booming economy you'll find better paying industrial jobs. Nashville is about an hour away.

Blacksburg VA is near some great nature spots. If you are interested in venturing out to the big NE cities there's a Megabus stop next door in Christiansburg so you can explore them without being burdened by a car.

Johnson City TN has the best scenery of the 3 and access to tall mountains. I don't find the downtown as cohesive as Athens but it has the local businesses. A bonus is it's an easy day trip to Asheville so you can enjoy those amenities without paying high rent.

What I find interesting is that its one of the few college towns that isn't directly connected to the interstate system, although GA-316 could potentially fix that, I just find that a bit odd.
