can you name a few real good smaller periphery areas right near athens where one might find it a tad rural?

i am assuming that because it's a college town you will find more diversity and will maybe find more acceptance of our interracial family.

Winterville... cute little town just outside Athens proper.

I'd stay out of the real rural towns, it'll be hit or miss with acceptance. If you want to live around Athens, just live in it.

i have some adoption friends who have kids from my daughter's orphanage, and it would be so neat to live near them. one is in lawrenceville and one near athens.

is it nice there?

Lake Lanier has generally very expensive homes on it...some are into the multi-millions. It is an extremely popular vacation destination with Atlantans. There have been major issues with the lake's depleted water level due to drought over the last couple of years, but the situation seems to be slowly correcting itself.
Athens is a charming college town, easily accessible to Atlanta (1 hr).
Lawrenceville is suburban Atlanta; it has good and bad neighborhoods, a nice downtown area, and is becoming increasingly multicultural.

We moved here from San Mateo, it's about 20 min south of San Francisco. It's way way way cheaper. We live in Marietta we have a 5 br house that the mortgage is the same price as our 2br apartment rent was. Everything is cheaper, gas, food, dinner, etc. Some have said you get paid less, I guess that depends on what you do. My husband makes about the same amount of money he made in CA.
I like it here better than CA, people are nicer, I was surprised how aloof people were in the bay area. It's prettier here, there were pretty parts in CA ( half moon bay ) but here, everything is just prettier, more trees, more grass, bigger yards. You really have to look around because every town is different, I recommend renting an apartment and just taking some time to see which town best fits you. Some are laid back, some are conservative, some are ecclectic. We rented for 6 months in Decatur and just asked around, drove around and figured out which town fit our needs the most.
