Why is plastic surgery stigmatized by society? (illegal, compared, vs)

Even in relatively liberal areas of the Western World? I don't think it's illegal anywhere but people seem to condemn it as if it were a criminal or immoral act.
I've personally never understood this. Even when people just get minor alterations that make their faces better and not just for sexual appeal (getting big breasts or a big ass), people still say things like "It's vain and unnecessary" or "It's just so fake!". And then there are religious arguments like "God doesn't make mistakes, he gave you that 'x'....for a reason"
I thought our liberal western societies were open to people improving their lives especially when they look objectively better. If changing your face would most likely result in a higher self esteem and thus greater confidence, why would anyone object to it provided it can be done safely and payed by the individual undergoing the surgery?

When cosmetic surgery is done to correct a distracting flaw in a face, I completely get it. Like if the person has one eye that droops very noticeably, or a lip scar that makes their smile look very "off", or something like that, I think everyone gets it. If you have a facial feature that you are very uncomfortable with and others notice immediately, it's like getting a missing front tooth replaced. Everyone understands it.
I am a little curious when people have invasive surgical procedures that aren't really considered distracting or "flaws". I wonder what those people see when they look at themselves in the mirror.

The thing is, we are treated differently based on how we look.
Take an example of an 18yr old black male (very African looking) kid who acts feminine vs an 18yr old white feminine guy (facial features look more girly) and who is feminine. Both have the desire to be in romantic/porn films that involve femme guys and in their personal life enter casual relationships. The former is going to have a much difficult time getting into roles that involve feminine guys compared to the latter guy.
Now if the black guy wants to get surgery to lighten skin and or feminize his facial features, why shouldn't he?

The whole risk thing is overstated..if the perceived benefit outweighs the risk then do it. It is seen negatively because it is CHEATING in some people's eyes...you have the nerve to want what you don't have!
I'm unsure that there exists any widespread stigma associated with cosmetic surgery aside from the folks who elect to go noticeably overboard with procedures.

Anyways, what about male circumsision? People don't seem to mind that.
