I am just not in favor of all these name changes and I think people could make better use of their time and energy. However, if the actual people who are being named find it offensive, then it might be the way to go.
You have addressed the key question here. My impression is that many of these decisions are based on white people expressing offense on behalf of racial and cultural minorities. That strikes me as a subtle form of racism in itself: a form which does more harm to society than the purported motivation for the original naming.

I'd suspect this is part of the offense. A sports team does what? Play a trivial game in order to entertain others. It's not even true life. Not too many honorable or even dignified associations go along with that.
I've asked many indians (that's what they called themselves when I was with them) at Pow-Wows around the country, several reservations and 4 that I've worked with in the past, all said this name issue is Lib BS and they are not in favor of a nae change.
You can quit the eye rolling, I’m just a reasonably intelligent Limey, with a soupçon of French blood, if sports were being discussed, and someone mentioned Milwaukee, the first word I’d think of would be Brewers,
What the - - -is so damned sacred about any word(not just sports teams) that offend a very small % of people?
And yet people from the New York City area get awfully upset when we Western New Yorkers say that NYC is not really a part of the real New York State.
