Unions have a socialistic altitude that all employees are equal and in turn protect the week and the lazy people

I believe that if you cracked open a history book--which you clearly have not done--you would know that the reason unions formed in the first place had nothing to do with a notion that all employees are equal. Unions formed because the conditions imposed on workers by management were, very simply, untenable. If you won't stand up for yourself, then you have no choice but to deal with what's handed to you. You want to be anti-union, then by all means go right ahead; you must have one of the most ideal work situations in the country, since you can obviously afford to put other people down for trying to improve themselves.

And to sickofnyc, it's true that the transit strike of 2005 didn't accomplish much. But that turned out to be a result. The point was that we had the opportunity--had we not been unionized, we wouldn't have had that much.

I've stated previously in this thread that unions served their purpose....about 75 years ago. Yes thank you for weekends, 40hr work week, healthcare benefits so on. And no they didn't start out as socialist organizations. However at lot has changed. Now MANY are self-serving entities. And yes MANY would like you to believe that all are the same, a teachers union that I am familiar with definitly does. The same with 1199 and other medical related unions. No merit based raises, whether you KA or are a slug your raise is the same.

I work for a major non-union hospital in NYC. Several years ago the Technologists found they were not getting comperable pay for their level and volume of work. They took salaries from surrounding hospitals brought it to the attn of the Dept head and basically said if you don't match we walk. No union involved. They got their pay raise and since then we've been one of the highest paid in the city, the nurses are THE highest paid in the city and it's reviewed every two years. No dues paid no propaganda shoved down our throats.

What do you think would happen if we got rid of all of the unions today? Do you think that business would be inclined to keep the 40 hour work week? Health care benefits? Weekends? Overtime pay? Safe working conditions?

You and I know what would happen. Sickofnyc probably has a rather different take!

unions are both good and bad...it depends on where they are. If the job is hazardous then yes...if you are ringing people out at a grocery store..NO!

unions in customer service industry hurts the business it is in. retail and grocery unions seek to control the business's they get their grimy hands into. I am yet to see a union in this industry that has done ovarall good. I have not found one to date and never will. Case and point...wal-mart. no union would stand a chance in a walmart for long. Walmart does infact take great care of its associtates for the most part. The managers are the ones who screw it up. Great benefits, great pay for the duties they ask you to do.

This better treatment & benefits is the result of unions in a backhand way. How else could business that do treat employees better keep unions out than to eliminate the the need for unions with their own version of better treatment and benefits?

So unions benefit even the non-union employee by their very existence!

Although, of course, it'll be a cold day in hell before anti-union people ever acknowledge this!
