Theres a group of spanish guys who ride the subway playing instruments. Like a whole mariachi band, dressed up and everything. Totally worth my buck. Why? because they performed a service they entertained me for 10 min.
That's called busking. It's very common. Musicians do it all the time, and once in awhile a mime will try his/her hand at it.
Both my sons are professional musicians. One of them made well over $100 one short evening, downtown, during the Christmas season. He simply stood on the corner, played acoustic guitar, and softly sang Christmas songs.
Oh yea, I love it when people do that....it's so great to walk through cities like that. What a great example of sharing you're talents with society. If you're going to jam out a little, why not practice on the streets, and even better you might get paid for it!

The only time I don't like it is if they're excessively loud and obnoxious. Unfortunately, that happens once in awhile.
True true, volume control is a must because people might be having conversations or not be particularly fond of the genre you are playing and they shouldn't be forced to leave the area if it is not specifically designated for the music the musician is playing.
I'm guessing these people aren't homeless because the homeless always disappear (at least in news stories) during a Democrat administration.
I watched a documentary on these "superheroes" in Los Angeles that dress up and walk the streets and pressure tourists to have their photo taken with them for money. That was illuminating.
I avoid the scenario of panhandling by living in a town that has no central downtown. It's pure sprawl. Makes it harder to accost someone on foot. Plus there are a number of really old senior citizen drivers, drunks and unlicensed drivers that live here so no panhandler in his right mind would stand in the middle of the road and pressure drivers for money.
There is a solution, you know. Print up and distribute some brochures telling people about the good money they can make in other towns with a lenient policy towards panhandlers. Panhandlers won't stay if they aren't making money. You just have to show them where they can make more.
