Western culture is a culture that celebrates "life" and "youth" as opposed to other cultures--such as Asian and Native American--that celebrate maturity and wisdom, even ancestor worship; thus our obsession with youth and staying young is just part of our culture. Some even attribute a deep-seated fear of death and an unpleasant Afterlife as part of the phenomenon.
Growing up, I thought this problem was exclusively for women but this paranoia has affects men too. The "anti aging cream" highlights western civilizations complete paranoia with staying young. I am self described cardio nut, with my own forms paranoia to stay young. I see ALOT of anti aging attempts or exercising. I feel these over-the-top exercising connects to staying young paranoia. Those individuals probably have the creams on their faces.
When we're talking about "anti-aging," I think that obsession is just as good a word to use as paranoia. I also think that people need to wake up and smell the coffee: why not just calm down and recognize that you don't actually have an option. Not only are you going to age, but you're going to die, too. Them's the facts; deal with 'em, and go about the business of living your life.
