Exactly. ...Mass transit can't be used efficiently for rural areas, so private trans must still be used...Another Catch 22-- if only a small portion of the population needs private vehicles, the economy of scale making it efficient to produce those vehicles will be upset and they won't get produced or be affordable.

It's not so simple as some of the simple minds seem to think.

I am staying with the grandkids this weekend in one of the trendy areas of inner Sydney. The council have just spent a fortune on installing cycleways which results in narrower streets for other traffic. The only place I have seen anyone riding on them was in the park where people would ride anyway.

I am not opposed to cycleways and use public transport all the time (around here, which is the wealthiest electorate in the country, many families only have one car) but I believe some common sense should make sure all modes of transport are catered for.

I prefer gas, but am ok with using electric. The buildings I've lived and owned in recently have generally only allowed electric ranges, so I've had to get used to them.

That reminds me of areas that have the bikes for rent laying all over the sidewalks and blocking the wheelchair access. Good intentions but not thought out or managed well.

And I'm not even in a rural area - I just live in a bedroom community outside of a city. I also live in Texas, where public transportation between cities is a pretty ridiculous concept. Or rather, an expensive waste of tax dollars (and don't get me started on property taxes).

Yes, around here they have banned most of the bike share companies for the same reason.
I love it here where you can walk to the train station, there are buses every few minutes, a new tram nearby. However this morning I will be driving the grandkids to school as it is simply more convenient as I then will be heading home to the suburbs. We want and use all options.
