I'm looking to get rid of my car because of insurance primarily, but also to reduce damage to the enviroment. Any opinions on scooters?

Talked to an older man here in town who bought a scooter over a year ago and loves it. He paid $875 for it brand new and gets around 100 miles/gallon.

Several years ago I had a moped I used to help a friend with a morning paper route. The only scare I got from that was when I was cruising along at top speed of around 37 MPH, looked to my left, and was eye to eye with a Great Dane trotting along side me! That's a wild feeling! lol

Vespa's have done well for a friend, she loves the things out of the options. However, be sure you are careful...I know she stopped loving it so much after getting hit by a careless driver and was sent to the hospital.

Vespas will go a lot faster than the usual moped, I found the tires too small for the speed they can go. After awhile, I got a smallish "basic" motorcycle which was a lot safer, I think, than the Vespa. They are a great in town machine, though. If you have to do any highway driving, perhaps a true motorcycle would feel more stable.

You will definitely save some money with a scooter over a car. However, motorcycles and scooters are not required to meet the same emission standards that cars are. Some motorcycles have catalytic converters, but I'm not sure about Vespas.

your purchasing a scooter will not change their driving behavior. the good news you will save money, the bad, you cant spend it in a pine box.

The Vespa belongs in Italian movies of the 1960's, not on the road in front of my pickup.

No, it definitely belongs in front of your pickup or anyone else's truck or SUV. It will keep you from speeding, you should be thankful. My advice to you is to ditch the gas guzzler.

OK, you live around Detroit...what do you do for half the year when it is to cold, snowy, etc to ride? Public transit in Detroit sucks, can you walk everywhere when you can't scoot?
I ride year round but I'm in climate where I can do it. My best friend lives in Ferndale, she might ride her scooter 6 months.
