Hello! My husband and I and 2 kids are planning to relocate to North Carolina once our home sells. We were fairly confident on the Charlotte area and then someone suggested we look at the Winston-Salem area. Which is better? Can anyone compare the two for me?? I need a good school system, affordable housing (150K or less) and jobs.
Also has anyone had any experience with "relocation specialists"? The whole idea of someone to help guide through the process and help with jobs just seems too good to be true..... You know what they say about that!!
Thanks!
I lived in both for extended periods. My choice would be Charlotte but I'm not up on schools etc. Winston Salem is a lot more conservative....truly.
Charlotte is much bigger....so brings the wonderful opportunities but also problems of any large city.
Compare the cities on city-data pages.
ps I miss Charlotte. I do not miss WS...

I am from Charlotte but now live in WS. Charlotte is where I was born and raised and when I do miss it I take a drive down during the day to do what I need to do but I also enjoy living in WS. WS has some cool stuff to do and it is a lot more laid back. When I am in Charlotte it is very go go go but WS just is a slower pace. WHich I like. Now saying all that. I am 37 with a wife and a 2-year-old so if I was still in my 20's and single it would be Charlotte all day. Better nightlife and younger people but the stage I am at now I am not going out to clubs so I don't care about that anymore. I think it is what you want in life or where you are in life will guide to either WS or Charlotte. Plus I don't know what job you will have but it is very expensive to live in Charlotte. My mom still lives in Charlotte and she has a small split level house that is not modern nor has it had any major remodel but the prop taxes on the house alone is close to 3k a month. Again I still go down to Charlotte for Panther games and Hornet games and love it there but it got to expensive for me to live there and I get more bang for my buck in WS and for me, that is what I wanted. If I left WS just like I left Charlotte I would miss both. But it is hard for me to miss Charlotte because it is only an hour and 15 minutes away. So I get the best of both worlds.

$3K a month?? Or $3K a year? I mean, $3K/year is still quite a bit in taxes, but $3K/month is more than some make in a year.
That said, I'm with you on Winston-Salem (and the Triad in general). I like the somewhat slower pace (with still plenty to do and see). Charlotte is close enough for a day trip and we do like to partake in that trip once or twice a year... usually for a show, sporting event, or Carowinds.

Must be per year. A house would have to have a tax value of about $3 million to have a $36,000 a year tax bill.

Charlotte is a great town, but housing prices have risen tremendously over the last several years. You'll get much more bang for your buck in Winston-Salem. Schools are generally good in the Winston-Salem area as well (some better than others like any area). Winston-Salem has also been recognized nationally as having a low cost of living. Plus Charlotte is only about an hour away (unless you hit construction traffic. and there is a lot of construction traffic on I-85 and I-77 currently!). I would post links but I'm a new city-data user and they might flag me as a spammer (I'm not moderators!).

The OPs thread is from 2007, so the house they may have found for $150,000 in 2007 in Charlotte may cost $350,000 now.
I hope Winston-Salem is careful with what it wishes for when it comes to national recognition. Charlotte (add Asheville and Raleigh as well) used to be recognized for a low cost of living, but that claim can't be made anymore.

This makes me want to buy a house in Charlotte
