I look forward to seeing some games. You can also see games streaming on facebook. Playoff games are broadcast on ESPN. Its equivalent to AAA baseball or AHL hockey, the only difference is that its directly associated with the NBA unlike other minor league level basketball leagues. The new fieldhouse looks great. It's the third arena in the Greensboro Coliseum Complex. Another mini arena is attached to the big arena. The coliseum complex is growing. They are already planning for the expansion of the Greensboro Aquatic Center. There are a total of 6 seated venues at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex including convention/trade show space and the ACC Hall of Champions. The 2,200 seat War Memorial Auditorium was torn down because of the new 3,000 seat performing arts center thats being built downtown.
Best of luck to the Swarm. The quality of the D-League is starting to get better as time goes on. I would guess by the next 5 years all 30 NBA teams will have their own affiliate. I've been to a Texas Legends game, it's a fun experience and something that needs to be seen in person to fully appreciate. Minor league Basketball will probably never be as popular as minor league baseball/hockey but if done right, can be successful.
I'm happy Greensboro got this team. It's a perfect match, no major league competition to deal with and no major collegiate athletics in town, and a short drive to Charlotte to boot. There was no way this would have worked well in Raleigh.
Someone mentioned Hockey. Yes, I would approve of the Hurricanes ECHL affiliate in Greensboro. Actually any Hockey team in the Gate City would be fine with me.

Agreed, but I don't see where you could put an ECHL or AHL team around here. A 4000 seat gym isn't big enough for the ECHL and Greensboro Coliseum is obviously way too big. We would need an arena that seats at least 7-8K to be big enough for either league. Lawrence Joel in Winston-Salem is clearly big enough, and maybe even too big. But I'm not sure I see Wake Forest willing to host such a team.

Yeah, the Joel is about 14,600. Pretty big for ECHL, but not the biggest. The Greenville, SC, and Atlanta teams play in arenas almost as large, and the Cincinnati and Orlando teams play in bigger arenas.
Greensboro did have a hockey team both ECHL and AHL. Greensboro lost its AHL team so the city could temporarily host the Hurricanes while the RBC Center was being built. Greensboro hasn't had hockey since.

In theory I am of the opinion that the Greensboro Coliseum is not perfect but feasible for an ECHL team despite its cavernous size. Many Hockey teams that play in NBA sized arenas curtain off sections that no one will be sitting in anyway.
Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think the Joel Coliseum was built w/ Hockey in mind, hence why the Annex next door exists.

Not to nitpick, but Greensboro did have an ECHL team after the 'Canes moved to Raleigh. They were not successful though and the unsuccessful temporary stint of the Hurricanes who were destined for Raleigh anyways probably had a lot to do with that. I went to one of their games and they had maybe 300 people in the stands. I'm not surprised people forget about them.

Attendence was pretty good when Greensboro had the Carolina Monarchs. It was an AHL expansion team and at the time was the highest level of hockey in North Carolina, just one notch under the NHL Too bad Greensboro couldn't have returned to the American Hockey League as a Hurricanes affiliated team.

Well it has been a long time now (well over a decade) so perhaps there would be support if hockey were to come back. As was pointed out earlier in the thread, W-S is getting a team soon, though it is at a very low level. I'd definitely go to at least 2 or 3 ECHL games a year though should Greensboro Coliseum land a team. I know they can curtain off some of the seats, and frankly they would probably just curtain off the whole upper deck.
That's one of the things I do miss about Virginia was that we had the Norfolk Admirals... even if they did downgrade last year from AHL to ECHL.
